Computers 9 10 Project Ocelot: Career Opportunities

This is a three part research project. You (and if you want a partner, or a pair of partners) are going to be researching 3 different computer careers. You will answer 5 questions about each career. You have to make two creations in Minecraft that are related to each career. You will write your info about the career in the Minecraft project.

Here are questions to answer about each career:

Q1) What is the name of the computer career and what do they do?

Q2) What is the average salary for that job?

Q3) What is one thing that you learned about that job?

Q4) What is one thing that you are curious about that job?

Q5) Do you want to do that job?

Make your two creations on a giant scale, at least 30 X 30 blocks.

Here is a website you can look at to choose your 3 careers to research LINK

DTP: Famous T-shirts of History

Hello All,

Haven’t you always wanted to know what kind of shirt a famous person from history would wear? Now is your chance to find out! You are going to pick a famous person from history and design a t-shirt for them! Historically famous doesn’t mean a celebrity. Please pick someone from history who is/ was not a terrible person! We didn’t say they were infamous, after all. Tell us the name of your famous person and why they are famous. Your T-shirt will have a combination of text and images and should relate to the person who is wearing it. Your design will have stuff on the front and back of the shirt.

Once you are done, the imaginary time machine we are using will slip in to forward gear and you will design a t-shirt (front and back) for someone famous for something in the future! Tell us what they are famous for, and have a great design that matches that.

Here are some example blank T-shirt fronts.

DTP: Cutting Remarks

For this project we are going to learn how to use the knife tool to edit text.

Therefore we need some text to edit! Aphorisms are cool and interesting, so we will use them for this project.

Your job is first to find an aphorism you like. There are 719 of them here, or you  can go find your own source.

Make sure it’s really an Aphorism, it’s appropriate for school,  and that the quote is attributed, (that means it says who said/wrote the quote). Aphorisms are sayings of wisdom that you have to think about a bit to understand.

For example: “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”-proverb. What might this mean?

It means that something you already have is better than the chance to have something else. You shouldn’t let go of what you already have for the chance at something better.

Now, set up a new document to be 1920 by 1080 px.

Select the text tool  and set the font size to be pretty big. If your guess on the size is wrong, you can just make it smaller later.

big font size

Copy the aphorism and attribution and paste it in to the document.

Here is where you adjust the size to fit.

Next, we have to outline the text. There are two ways to do this,

  1. right click it and choose Create Outlines

Or 2. hold Shift +Ctrl + o  (the letter).

Now that it is outlines, you can the knife tool to slice through the letters. Make an interesting cut pattern for each line.

Then click Object> Ungroup

Now you should be able to click on part of a letter and recolor it by changing the fill.

Make a cool, creative and interesting pattern.

Now make another artboard by following these steps:

2nd board

on the 2nd board write your explanation for the Aphorism, in your own words.

Now repeat the steps for a second Aphorism, but this time move the top part of the cut letters upwards (maybe group them first if you want the distance to all be the same) and create an interesting effect, then draw 1 or 2 pieces of  art that reflects your 2nd aphorism, instead of explaining it.

DTP: Cutouts

For this project we are going to experiment with the knife tool. You can find the knife tool under the three dots, near the bottom.

The knife tool lets you cut things, and we are going to use it to cut out some shapes and make something from the shapes we cut out. Bonus points if you can also make something out of the spaces that are left behind when you are done cutting!

Knife tool

It’s picky though, it wants to only cut out complete shapes of solids, (which is what we are going to do).

To set up, make a new document that is 1920 X 1080 px.

new doc 1920 by 1080

Then make a black rectangle that takes up exactly half the space. You can see the size of the rectangle if you resize it.

bw set up

Now start experimenting with cutting out shapes and moving them to the white area.

You will know when you got it right by whether or not a square appears around the cut area when you click inside it.

failure

This is a fail.

Success

This will work!

When you have a bunch of shapes, try to make them in to something cool and interesting. You can copy a shape you cut out, rotate or resize it.

Work in progress

Here is an example, that I am still working on, this is not a finished product, but I added another colored rectangle so I could cut out some eyes.

Remember, be creative and if you can figure out a way to make the stuff left behind in the black part also look like something cool and interesting, that’s worth bonus marks!

DTP: Wallet / Purse design

Make a wallet or purse with interesting art on it. Decide who is going to be your target market (buyer) and create something they will like. You need to show the front, back and inside of the wallet/purse. Label the parts (coin purse, card storage…etc)

Tell me who the target market is (with text) and why they will want to buy your wallet/ purse.

DTP: Phone Case Design

Design two phones cases for your phone or a phone you would like to have. Make them artistic and creative, not just solid colors. Try to creatively incorporate the holes in the case for camera lenses, if you can. 1 phone case design should be for something that you like, the 2nd phone case design should be something that you think would appeal to people aged 40~55 who like anime, sports, or video games. Don’t trace out your art, but using brushes and shapes is ok. Incorporate the color of the case in the design of the art work, as a contrast or a compliment to it. For example, if the case is black, art that is white will be a contrast to it, and art that has white in it will compliment it. Try to use the whole phone case body for at least one of the designs, the other design should use at least half the space.

To make your document the size of the phone, follow these steps.

  1. Find out the dimensions of the phone.

2. Set up your document so it’s the same size.

3. Add the camera holes.

4. Use the arc tool and the pen tool to make the rounded corners. This is in progress in this pic.

5. Save this file with two different names, so you don’t have to repeat the process.

6. Start to design your phone cases!

DTP: Videogame Cash

You have been chosen by the government of a country in a video game world (of your choice) to design the new currency for that government. You need to design at least 2 bills of 2 different denominations (For example you could choose 2 of  $5, 10, $20, $100), and at least 2 coins (from 5, 10, 25 cents and a dollar).

Since it’s currency you need to design the front and back. Either the leader, a figurehead, or famous places or people should appear on the money. The bills should all be the same size, but the coins should be different colors and sizes. You have to draw all the artwork yourself. Look at the examples, and include all the features that are necessary to be a good currency, (date issued, value, country, symbols, serial number, signature, etc).

Bonus marks for watermarks / security features.
